History of Nedco
Nedco's legacy begins in 1895 when Northern Electric was founded in Montreal as the telephone manufacturing division for Bell Canada with 50 employees. In 1914, a merger with the Imperial Wire and Cable company launched Northern Electric Company Limited, expanding our offerings. By 1919, Northern Electric had 12 distribution houses across Canada, laying the foundation for our proximity model.
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Northern Electric expanded its footprint, opening warehouses in Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Vancouver. By 1935, Northern Electric had 18 locations across Canada. In the 1950s and 1960s, Northern Electric invested in telecommunications R&D. In 1975, the distribution division became known as Nedco.
On September 25, 2000, Nedco was acquired by Rexel SA, strengthening our brand alongside a world leader in electrical supplies distribution.
Rexel purchased Westburne Industrial Enterprises (including Nedco) in September 2000, forming the largest electrical and telecom distributor.Today, Rexel operates from 2,000 locations in 32 countries, with 27,000 employees, making them one of the largest distributors of electrical products in the world.
We’ve experienced much over the decades, and now it’s time to add one more chapter to our story. As we reflect on this remarkable journey,we honor our history and the people who have shaped Nedco into what it is today—an omnichannel distributor of electrical and datacom supplies.
